Welcome to Smith Farms Ltd., a generational agricultural venture led by Andrew Smith in Newton, PEI! For over five generations, the Smith family has dedicated themselves to cultivating the land with unwavering commitment.
With a primary focus on potato farming, the Smiths also incorporate rotational crops and embrace the use of cover crops to promote soil health. Andrew understands the vital importance of preserving the environment and takes great pride in being a steward of the land.

Beyond the daily operations of the farm, Andrew finds fulfillment in his involvement with various agricultural organizations. As Acting Chair of the EPAA Board, he diligently contributes to the collective interests of local farmers. Additionally, Andrew serves as a representative on the processing committee of the PEI Potato Board, where he engages in discussions that shape the future of the industry.
Andrew’s passion for agriculture runs deep, having been nurtured since his earliest days. Growing up on the farm, he developed an innate connection with the land and those who came before him. Andrew has regarded the joy of working outdoors, the camaraderie with fellow farmers, and the thrill of overcoming challenges as being the most rewarding aspects.

However, Andrew acknowledges the challenges that come with farming. In today’s landscape, the rising costs associated with farming, combined with the risks posed by weather fluctuations and market dynamics, pose significant hurdles to overcome. Andrew also recognizes that farming, especially with crops like potatoes, allows little room for error. Every decision impacts an entire season, emphasizing the need for careful planning and dedication.
Given the ties between environmental sustainability and financial viability, Andrew actively pursues measures to enhance the farm’s practices. By incorporating cover cropping, soil-building rotation crops, reduced tillage practices, and precision agriculture technologies, Smith Farms works to ensure that a balance is maintained between productivity and environmental responsibility.
