Hilltop Produce Ltd.

Meet Andrew Lawless, a fourth-generation potato farmer based in Kinkora, PEI! Since 2001, Andrew and his family have been the proud owners and operators of Hilltop Produce Ltd, cultivating a diverse range of crops including potatoes, grains, winter wheat, barley, and more.

For Andrew, the choice to work in agriculture was rooted in his upbringing. Having explored various occupations, his passion for farming was undeniable. The joy of producing food, the freedom of working outdoors, and the cherished moments spent with his family each day drew him back to the fields. In Andrew’s eyes, farming presents many instances in which one must take on multiple roles.

“ If you can farm, there’s nothing much you can’t do.”

Embracing daily challenges is one of Andrew’s favourite aspects of farming. Each day brings new adventures, and Andrew’s resilience and ability to embrace change fuel his passion for agriculture even more.

Yet, among the joys and triumphs, Andrew acknowledges that climate change remains a significant challenge in agriculture. He recognizes the importance of adaptation to confront this challenge head-on. Rather than resisting change, Andrew understands the value of aligning with it, ensuring that his farm evolves alongside the shifting climate.

“Change and challenge are constant. With research projects involved, the East Prince group was able to learn, define and adapt to these changes in climate. It’s very beneficial to be able to do this with both federal and provincial researchers in our fields.”

The quest for sustainability lies at the heart of Andrew’s farming practices. As a member of the EPAA, he sees the value in showcasing the group’s efforts to the wider community. By implementing practices such as cover cropping, reduced tillage, precision agriculture technologies, nutrient stewardship, and erosion control structures, Hilltop Produce Ltd. demonstrates its unwavering commitment to preserving the land for future generations.

Andrew continues to demonstrate the necessary adaptability and commitment to sustainability in agriculture. Through his proactive approach to climate change, Andrew sets a practical example for the future of farming, ensuring the long-term viability of his farm and its practices.
