Meet Andrew Toombs, the proud owner of Bedeque Farms Ltd., a third-generation family farm located in Bedeque, PEI. For over 60 years, farming has been a cherished tradition in Andrew’s family.
On the farm, Andrew and his team grow various crops, including processing and seed potatoes, which he nurtures with great care throughout the growing seasons. He also incorporates cover crops like sorghum sudangrass, barley, and tillage radish to enrich the soil and promote sustainability.
Andrew’s passion for agriculture stems from his love of watching things grow. He finds joy in witnessing the transformation of the red soil into a vibrant array of colours during the growing season. The most rewarding part to him is knowing he plays a crucial role in feeding people.
“I enjoy getting up in the morning and doing different things each day. Working with a great crew while seeing the crops grow throughout the growing season is a one-of-a-kind experience. My favourite time of year is harvest time when we see all our work hopefully pay off.”

Believing in the importance of sustainable farming, Andrew actively participates in the East Prince Agri-Environment Association (EPAA). By working with other fellow producers and adopting sustainable practices, he hopes to set a good example for the next generation of farmers.
“I think it’s important to work together as a grower group with common goals of looking after our land and environment for future generations.”
Andrew Toombs, Bedeque Farms Ltd.
Andrew strives for a harmonious balance between economic profitability, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility. To achieve this, he continuously enhances his farming practices. For example, Bedeque Farms Ltd. has adopted a well-planned rotation of crops and cover crops and reduced tillage practices.
Additionally, the Toombs take pride in combating soil erosion by implementing soil erosion control structures like berms, grass waterways, and diversion terraces. Embracing precision agriculture technologies and planting trees demonstrates their dedication to sustainable practices. Their commitment to continuous improvement reflects their desire to obtain better potato crops, improve soil health, and ultimately secure a more prosperous future for Bedeque Farms Ltd.
As Andrew continues his journey as a farmer, his unwavering dedication to preserving the environment, fostering sustainable practices, and providing food to others remains his driving force. In the end, Andrew’s message is simple: farming may be challenging at times, but overall, it’s an enjoyable and rewarding endeavour.
