Introducing Adam Hogg of Klondike Farms Ltd. in Wilmot Valley, PEI! With his father, John, and brother, Bradley, Adam dedicates his days to nurturing a variety of crops, including potatoes, wheat, barley, corn, and brown mustard. Established in 1826, this family farm has operated for six impressive generations.
While Adam values the diversity in his work, he acknowledges that certain challenges in his field tend to surface more frequently than others.
“The most challenging thing that I find is trying to maintain a positive public image. It’s also hard to find enough employees to do the jobs that we need to get done. To me, employee availability has gone down while public perceptions have improved.”
Adam Hogg, Klondike Farms Ltd.
When it comes to taking care of the environment, Adam and his team are no strangers to trying new things. They believe that enhancing farming practices is not just a benefit for their farm but a responsibility to ensure that the fields remain viable for the next generations of farmers. To achieve their sustainability goals, they plant cover crops and soil-building rotation crops, implement a strict rotation system, adopt reduced tillage practices, embrace precision agriculture technologies like GPS and yield monitors, and incorporate soil erosion control structures.
“It’s always important to improve your practices to make sure you’re doing things the best possible way. Just because you’ve been doing it a certain way for decades, it doesn’t mean that there isn’t a better way to do it.”
