Using constructed wetland and vegetated grass waterways to improve water quality.

Project partner – Souris and Area Branch of PEI Wildlife Federation

This project involves the construction of functioning wetlands and vegetated drain ditches to minimize runoff of sediment and contaminates from fields to improve water quality in nearby waterways.

This turns low-lying wet and boggy areas of an agricultural field into a functioning wetland. The wetland filters water coming from fields before entering the streams.

The goal is to enhance water quality and wetlands, add increased biodiversity and habitat for birds, insects, amphibians, and all inhabitants, overall enhancing the local ecosystem.    

4 farms are participating with this BMP.
